Golden State Region of the Plymouth Owners ClubGolden State Region: Serving California Vintage Plymouth Car Owners |
TRUCKS AND TRAINSMay 8, 2012by Margie Amos, Sunday, May 6, 2012 dawned a beautiful California spring day for the long overdue first gathering of the southern contingent of the Golden State Region Plymouth Owners Club. Bob and I arrived just before 10:00 a.m. in the parking lot of the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris where the American Truck Historical Society was hosting a truck show. Nick and Char DeSimone, Scott Whiteman and Wil Wheeler were already on site to greet us. Soon, Bob and Darlene Davis, our good friend Darryl Harris and Nicki and Larry Labrack with guest Allen Michaelis arrived. Our group made its way to the gate to pay our admission for the special event of the day. The OERM was founded in 1956 and is open 363 days a year from 9-5. Other than special event weekends, admission and parking is free unless one wishes to ride any of the operating cars. A typical weekend has a couple of early Los Angeles street cars operating on a loop line within the park and either an electrical or diesel train operating on the main line that will take a short trip to the historical City of Perris Train Depot. The park is also available during the week for charter and youth groups to explore and learn about these old modes of transportation. The truck show featured restored antique trucks of every size, emergency and military vehicles, farm equipment and even some teardrop trailers. There was a swap meet going on for those looking for a possible part needed for a restoration job. The numerous out buildings were open for exploration of the exibits, including the new Grizzly Flats building and my favorite, the display of the street car featured in the movie "Singin' In The Rain". While our group was browsing the show, Bruce Lofgren and Tom and Jan Reed with their clan showed up to take in the show. We all regrouped around noon to make our way over to the food booths and picnic under the canopy of shade trees in the park. It was nice to chit chat with each other to catch up on personal news and the club. Darryl and Nicki were then off to take in their train ride for the day, while others finished browsing the show and some began to make their way home. Good day, good show, good friends. Great memories. Edited on 2012-05-10 by Margie Amos An archive of older news articles can be found on the news page | |||||||||||
